FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about what Bucketeer does, what it does not do and how Bucketeer Pro works.

What is Bucketeer?

Bucketeer is a native Mac app for object storage. It browses, transfers, mounts and syncs buckets and containers on Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage and S3-compatible services. It is published by DigitalFreedom Global LLC and distributed only through the Mac App Store.

Which storage providers does Bucketeer support?

Bucketeer has presets for AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, Civo, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces and Storj. The Custom preset connects to MinIO and any other S3-compatible endpoint, with path-style addressing where needed.

Does Bucketeer work with Azure Blob Storage?

Yes. Azure Blob Storage has its own backend in Bucketeer and connects with the storage account name and key. Browsing, transfers, share links as SAS links, versions and sync jobs work with Azure, and a sync job can run between S3 and Azure.

Which macOS version do I need?

Bucketeer needs macOS 14 or later. Mount as Drive needs macOS 14.1 or later, and redeeming offer codes needs macOS 15 or later.

Can I mount a bucket in Finder?

Yes, with Bucketeer Pro. Mount as Drive uses the File Provider extension of macOS, so the bucket appears in Finder like a disk. Server-side changes reach Finder when you refresh the bucket. Buckets with client-side encryption cannot be mounted in this version.

What happens if a file changed on the server while I was editing it?

Bucketeer does not overwrite it. Your version is uploaded next to the original as a conflict copy named with the date, and Bucketeer shows a message. This applies to Open With editing and to files saved in a mounted drive.

How does client-side encryption work?

You create a key for a bucket in Settings. Every upload to that bucket is then encrypted on your Mac with AES-256-GCM and decrypted on download. The key is kept in the macOS Keychain on this Mac. If the key is lost, nobody can decrypt those objects.

Does Bucketeer collect any data?

No. Bucketeer has no server, no user account and no analytics or tracking. Credentials, logs and settings stay on your Mac. The provider only receives personal data if you write to support yourself.

What does Bucketeer Pro add?

Bucketeer Pro adds Mount as Drive, sync jobs, watch folders, copy to another account and menu bar mode. Browsing, transfers, editing in other apps, encryption, versions, metadata, dashboard, activity log, trash, share links, Shortcuts and Spotlight are part of the app without Pro.

Is Bucketeer Pro a subscription?

No. Bucketeer Pro is a single one-time in-app purchase through the Mac App Store, with Family Sharing. The App Store shows the price in your currency before you buy.

Can I try Bucketeer Pro first?

Yes. You can try Bucketeer Pro for 14 days, once per Apple ID. When the trial ends, Bucketeer continues without the Pro features and nothing is charged. Restore Purchase also brings back a running trial on another Mac.

Can Bucketeer sync between two different providers?

Yes, with Bucketeer Pro. A sync job copies, moves or mirrors between two buckets on any accounts, for example from S3 to Azure, or between a local folder and a bucket. It runs by hand, at launch, on a schedule or when the local folder changes.

Does Bucketeer support hardware security keys?

Only as a technical preview. Settings, Security lists connected smart-card readers. In version 1.0, showing stored secrets again still asks for Touch ID or your Mac password.

Is Bucketeer open source?

The source code is published on GitHub under a source-available license. You can read it and contribute, but it is not OSI open source, and the only binary is the Mac App Store version.

Which languages is Bucketeer available in?

The app and its built-in help come in 20 languages: English (US and UK), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Where do I get help?

The built-in help opens with Command and question mark. For a problem, use Help, Report an Issue in the app or the support form at support.apps.digitalfreedom.co.za.
